Program Details
Explore the many cultural aspects of music through the study of composition, music theory, community music, computer music, improvisation, Indigenous studies, gender studies and disability studies. Gain thorough knowledge about a wide variety of musical styles and traditions, including Western classical music, Canadian and world music, jazz and popular music. You’ll benefit from a close-knit music community and learn from highly qualified professors who are internationally distinguished and recognized for their achievements in teaching and research.

Practicum placements are available at various arts, education and media organizations.
Please note: The BA in Music is not a performance degree. It does not include individual instruction in performance or require an audition for entry. Theory, ear training, recitals or ensemble work are not requirements of the program. For performance-based program in music, please see the Bachelor of Music.

MUSI 1000 - Introduction to the Study of Music
Introduction to issues and methods in the study of music. Development of writing and research skills; methodological approaches in all academic areas of music (historical musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, music theory).
MUSI 1002 - Issues in Popular Music
History of world popular music from the 19th century until the present. Topics may include the growth of the music industry, the impact of technology, stardom, world music, the role of the press, copyright, censorship, and sexuality.
