Bio: My name is Alyson Katuqaq McKay, and I am a third-year student at Carleton majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Law. I grew up in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, and moved to Ottawa as a first-generation university student. I actually started at Carleton undeclared, so it took me a little while to figure out what I wanted to do, but I eventually found my way to Anthropology, which I really enjoy.  Carleton has become a pretty comfortable home away from home for me. I like to be involved with the Carleton Academic Student Government, play intramural sports whenever I get the chance, and have somehow become very familiar with campus over the last few years. When I’m not doing schoolwork, I’m usually playing volleyball, hanging out with friends, or counting down the days until I get to go home.  It took a whole community of supportive people to get me to where I am now. Carleton has so many amazing people resources that have helped me along the way that I’d really love to share.

I absolutely love the campus, how close together everything is, and how we’re both so close to nature and the city! My mom and one of my best friends came with me on the decision trip, where we toured the campuses, and it was so helpful!  In the end, I gathered all the information I’d learned and just put it in a pros and cons list! But really, it was off  vibes that I chose Carleton; this list was really just a way of making that choice seem more concrete!

It is important to have financial stability at university, and Carleton’s Awards and Financial Aid Office is amazing.

Bio: I chose Carleton because I was really interested in the Biomedical and Electrical Engineering program. Going into university, I already knew that I enjoyed both healthcare and engineering, but I wasn’t sure how I could combine those interests into one degree. When I found Carleton’s program, it stood out to me because it gave me the opportunity to study electrical engineering while also learning how engineering can be applied to medicine and healthcare. Since starting at Carleton, I’ve had the chance to learn more about the different directions an engineering degree can take you and get involved in opportunities beyond the classroom. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most is being surrounded by students with very different interests while still being able to connect through engineering and problem solving. As a Grade 12 student, I wish I had known that choosing a university isn’t only about comparing program names or rankings. Looking at the courses you’ll actually take, the opportunities available outside of class, and whether the program matches your interests can make the decision much easier. You also don’t need to have your entire career figured out before starting university.

As someone from a small-town Ottawa is a great mix of both the big city and small town in one.  Carleton grabbed my attention more and stood out the most then other universities by how Carleton itself is its own little town that is surrounded by nature and wildlife which makes it very pleasant/ scenic when walking along the Canal. In University there will be ups and downs so I can’t advise you enough to reach out to your professors, your classmates, or even upper years if you need help. At Carleton they have your best interest and want to help you succeed. I have made some of the closet of friends at Carleton. You make your university experience not the other way around. So, stay focused, have fun, make memories, and do not take this chapter in your life for granted.

Bio: Being from Ottawa and having my older sister attend Carleton, I was already quite familiar with Carleton’s beautiful campus, scholarship opportunities, engaging programs, and welcoming atmosphere! I had initially planned on moving away for university to pursue law, but living in Ottawa has tremendous advantages for those interested in public affairs, politics, and international relations. My program, BPAPM, won me over with its multidisciplinary approach, professional and academic resources, helpful professors, and tight-knit community. I also discovered that with my specialization in Rights and Human Development, I could combine my interests in addressing global and domestic public policy challenges with my interest in legal studies. Going to open house events and speaking directly with professors really helped confirm my decision! Since then, I have been able to gain leadership experience through extracurriculars, work part-time, participate in the co-op program, and make new friends. Carleton has been an amazing experience where I have been able to learn, grow, and develop my skills, and you can always reach out for support!

Bio: Before beginning my time at Carleton I was really interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree that would challenge me to look at the world through a variety of lenses. With an interest in art, literature, and culture, I knew the Great Books program was right for me. Not only am I able to interpret foundational texts for my own understanding, but I can apply them into religious, philosophical, social and political contexts. Additionally, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to spend my third year abroad just outside of Dublin, Ireland. Being able to explore different cities on exchange further deepened my passion for history.
