Recognized as one of Canada’s leading institutions in the study and research of engineering and design, Carleton University’s Faculty of Engineering and Design offers students accredited programs and a challenging, diverse and flexible environment.

Our programs prepare and launch students into rewarding careers in the real world—local or abroad—by equipping them with the knowledge and skills that are highly desirable in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven society.

Life in Ottawa – one of the best places to work and live

Carleton University is located in Ottawa, the national capital of Canada. Ottawa is home to Canada’s largest technology park, housing 500+ companies and the country’s top influential industry leaders in areas such as AI, technology, healthcare and government.

Co-op – paid work experience

Many of our programs have a Co-op component (Co-op = paid work experience during studies, which can last between 1 and 2 semesters, optional). Our school has the 3rd largest co-op in the province, and students enrolled in paid co-op placements frequently secure career-launching work opportunities before they even graduate.

Hands-on learning

Near the end of your degree, final-year students are eligible for Capstone Design Projects – fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for tackling real-world problems. Embedded into our curriculum and class structure, you will work on invigorating and challenging team projects, learn from expert faculty and be exposed to real-world scenarios.

Unique support programs

We also provide unique programs for women in engineering and information technology and Black youth. Carleton created one of the first professional development programs for women in STEM, backed by industry and government partners. Students have access to networking, mentorship and career-ready skill development.

A great space to learn

Your first year in a new country, new school and program can be difficult and defined by many transitions. That’s why we have dedicated Engineering and Design services and resources—like the Academic Support Office and Elsie MacGill Learning Centre, which provide academic advising, tutoring and workshops to help our students succeed.

A supportive, student-centered community

Join a club or design team to explore your interests, pursue new ideas and meet people who share your creativity and curiosity—all while bolstering your resume. Our design teams work on projects year-round and compete against other universities from around the globe. Such as our CUInSpace team, who design, build and fly high-powered rockets.
