What to do after applying

At Carleton, admissions for most programs are done on a ‘rolling’ basis – as soon as an application and sufficient grades are provided, an assessment can be made.

For programs with additional admission requirements (Architectural Studies, Industrial Design, Information Technology [Interactive Multimedia and Design], Music, Nursing and Social Work) that require additional information (e.g., portfolios, supplementary applications), admission decisions will be made after the portfolio or supplementary application deadline. If you apply to any of the specialty programs and plan to submit an English-language test score, scores are due on or before the portfolio or supplementary application deadlines.

Verify the rank of you program choices

  • The rank of your program choices is important. Your highest ranked program at Carleton will be considered first, but all program choices will be assessed. If you qualify for your first choice, you will receive an offer of admission for that program.
  • Your offer of admission will include information on the status of your other program choices. If you are eligible for another choice, and if there is space available in that program, you can be given an offer of admission. If a program becomes full, you will not receive an offer of admission, even if you were previously eligible.

Ensure you have the correct prerequisites

Additional admissions requirements

  • Applicants to undergraduate degree programs in Architectural Studies, Industrial Design, Information Technology (Interactive Multimedia and Design), Music, Nursing and Social Work are required to submit additional admission material.
  • Applicants must submit the additional admission material by the submission deadline; submissions are not accepted after the deadline.
  • If you are submitting a language test score (such as TOEFL or IELTS) in support of your application, you must ensure that we receive the score on or before the deadline.

Submit any required documentation

  • If official documents are required to confirm your offer of admission, they can be sent directly from the institution to Carleton University.
  • If you are a current Ontario high school student, your grades are sent electronically through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre.
  • If you are not a current Ontario high school student, you must provide a transcript of all high school and/or pre-university work, as well as any post-secondary studies if applicable. You must provide transcripts of all studies you have attempted, regardless of whether they were full-time or part-time.
  • If you are currently registered in courses, you must send a list of your current course registration, as well as transcripts with your grades from these courses when they become available.
  • The language of instruction at Carleton University is English. In their own interest, students whose first language is not English must demonstrate that they can cope with the language demands of an English language university. Review our language proficiency requirements.

Scholarships and bursaries

Carleton offers one of the most generous scholarship programs in the country.

  • If you have been admitted to Carleton for fall entry with an admission average of 80 per cent or better, you will automatically be considered for a renewable Entrance Scholarship at the time of admission. You may be offered a renewable Entrance Scholarship provided you are entering Carleton for the first time from high school or CÉGEP and have no previous attendance at post-secondary educational institutions. To be considered for an Entrance Scholarship, we must receive your complete application for admission and all required grades by June 15.

  • If you are an excellent student from a Canadian college or are transferring from another university in Canada to a full-time undergraduate program at Carleton, you may be eligible for one of our scholarships for transfer students. Offered for fall entry only.
  • Our highest awards are our Prestige Scholarships. You will be considered for a Prestige Scholarship only if you are entering Carleton directly from high school or CÉGEP with an admission average of 90 per cent or better. The selection committee will also assess the range of your community or secondary school extracurricular activities. An application and letter of reference are required by March 1.
  • High school students who have taken a leadership role in their school’s extracurricular activities and in community service may also be considered for a Leadership Entrance Bursary. An application is required.
