How to Become an Accountant
The typical function of accountants in organizations is to provide financial and non-financial information on their organizations’ economic activities. This is equally important in business and not-for-profit sectors as well as the government. This information is required for external reporting purposes and for internal planning, decision making, and control purposes.
In addition to developing the fundamental technical skills required of accounting professionals, the Bachelor of Commerce Accounting Concentration at Carleton University emphasizes the comprehensive skills required of effective accounting professionals, such as the ability to take initiative, conduct independent research, think critically, exercise sound judgment, reason ethically, utilize technology proficiently, communicate effectively, and work in a team environment.
Applying to Accounting Certification Programs
Students taking the Bachelor of Commerce Accounting concentration can complete all the academic courses required to enter the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Education Program. Co-op hours in an approved placement can be counted towards the practical experience requirements to become a CPA. Sprott also offers a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting and a Master of Accounting (MAcc) program. The MAcc graduates can proceed directly to the CPA Common Final Exam.
