Co-operative education (co-op) allows students to gain 12 to 16 months of work experience during their degrees. Study terms alternate with paid, full-time work terms directly related to their programs of study.

Working in Canada as an international student
Canada is a multicultural and diverse country where contributions of international newcomers are welcome and appreciated.
International students in Canada can work both on and off campus while studying, if they meet eligibility requirements. On campus, there is no limit on work hours, while off campus, students can work up to 24 hours per week during the school year and full time during scheduled breaks. Minimum hourly wage in Ontario is $17.95 CAD per hour. Regulations are subject to change; check the Government of Canada website for the most current information.
International students wishing to gain up to three years of Canadian work experience can apply for a work permit after they graduate.

Is co-op available in every undergraduate program?

Can international students in Carleton’s bachelor’s degree programs apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and work in Canada after graduation?
Yes, international students who complete a bachelor’s degree at Carleton University may be able to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after graduation. A PGWP allows graduates to work in Canada for up to 3 years and gain valuable professional experience. It is an open work permit, which means you can work for most employers across Canada without needing a job offer before applying.
Eligibility for the PGWP is determined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Students should always check the latest information on the IRCC website before making plans for work after graduation.
