High School Workshop: Journalism
Journalism Workshop
Join Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication for a Journalism lecture! Teachers can choose from one of two exciting lecture themes:
- Generating Story Ideas
Students will learn the importance and challenges of generating ideas for news coverage. The lecture will include a brief ‘story scouting’ assignment where students will be directed to a variety of well-known news sources and asked to identify a story idea for a local or national audience. - Newswriting 101
Students will be introduced to the essential components of a news story using the classic Five Ws (Who, What, Where, When and Why). Using this technique, students will produce a short ‘lede’ (the introductory sentence or two of a news story) that captures and conveys the key facts about a realistic (but imaginary) news happening.
