Warm Greetings

We trust this update finds you well, and hope that summery weather has arrived for you too. Ottawa is in full bloom with our annual tulip festival and it’s beginning to feel like summer here. This update contains some important information that we trust you will find useful. Please review as this will help you and your students prepare and plan for their fall studies.

Still Time to Apply

Although the deadline for international students was April 1 for most programs, please note that we are still accepting new applications for September 2021, depending on availability. Students still exploring university options should apply as soon as possible to be considered for their first choice program. (See list of programs with firm early deadlines.)

Status Updates for your Applicants

Have you received updates or decisions for all of your applicants? Please remember to review Carleton360 for the most recent updates, including requests for new documents and decisions. If any of your students are still waiting for a decision, you are welcome to email robert.finlayson@carleton.ca to discuss the best way forward. Programs are reaching capacity, so please finalize any outstanding applications soon.

Third Party Forms

A reminder that we require a student-signed Third Party Authorization Form (pdf) for each of your applicants. This form is the basis to share what is otherwise protected information, and is also how we associate an application with a partner.

Accepting Offers

As your students make decisions about university, please remind them that accepting an offer of admission to Carleton will secure their spot in the program. There is no financial commitment required when accepting an offer, and we don’t require final grades or exam results if they’re not yet available. If students are interested in joining Carleton University in September, they need to accept offers of admission by the date indicated on the offer letter.

What About Grades and Documents?

Students should supply up to date transcripts and documents as soon as they’re available. We understand that many schools have been impacted by cancellations or delays, as well as adjusted assessment procedures. We consider all applications on a case by case basis, and are working with students to ensure we are taking into account their individual circumstances. If you wish to provide students with documentation from the school with relevant contextual information, they can upload that along with their results. You can also let students know they can get a speedier decision if they upload required documents to their application directly in our Carleton360 portal. (Watch: How to upload your documents).

Study Permits

Students are encouraged to apply for a study permit as soon as possible. Complete study permit applications received by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on or before May 15, 2021 should receive a decision by August 6, 2021. Applications submitted after this date will be processed as quickly as possible but without a guaranteed timeline (see additional details). Requirements for a complete study permit application will vary by visa office, and students must consult IRCC’s website for application instructions for their country. These may include biometrics, police record checks, immigration medical exams and other official documents. For advising, students can contact the International Student Services Office (ISSO) directly: isso@carleton.ca.

Summer Events

Students will have many opportunities to connect with Carleton and other students this summer. Please tell your students to keep an eye on our events page, as Carleton has planned activities tailored specifically for international students – including registration workshops, the launch of I-Start (a series of fun and informative activities), sessions on housing and preparing to travel to Canada, and more!

A Fall 2021 Update

As vaccinations continue to roll out across Canada, Carleton is planning for a safe and gradual return to campus in fall 2021. This includes plans for some in-person courses and activities on campus in the fall. We will also have online options to allow for maximum flexibility for students. Large classes will continue online for fall 2021, but we hope to offer a significant proportion of small and medium-sized classes (under 60 students), labs and tutorials in person or in a blended format. Information on whether courses are being offered in-person and online learning for fall 2021 will be available in May 2021, as part of course registration in June. We will provide more information as the situation continues to evolve. Find out more about Fall, including information about coming to Ottawa.
