About
Communication and Media Studies Mini-Lecture
Sports and/as Media
Join Dr. Liam Cole Young, Assistant Professor in Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication, for a mini-lecture that examines the development of sports into big business and big culture. We will track the crucial developments of the 1980s and 1990s that led to the intersection of sports with financial markets and new forms of promotional culture (among other things). More specifically, we will examine how sports and sport media transformed from niche, regional operations to globalized, corporate entities. We will also discuss recent developments in sports such as athlete activism and protest, trends in data analytics, and the rise of fantasy sports and gambling markets.
