Suddenly I find myself back at Carleton, ready to complete the fourth and final year of my university degree. Fourth year definitely hits you before you know it, and I wish I could slow things down. However, being in fourth year also comes with perks, and I am very excited to see where this year will take me.

I must admit, it is very strange being back at Carleton after a year abroad studying in Cardiff, Wales. I find myself pointing out little things on campus that are new to me, but that my peers have become accustomed to over the past year. The renovations, the new stairwells in the library: all the little differences remind me that the past year was not actually a dream, but I really was away from Carleton.

I was eager to give back to the community that provided me with the incredible opportunity to study in Cardiff last year. After being a part of Fall Orientation with the Student Experience Office in second year, I decided I wanted to do something different this year. So, I joined the International Student Services Office to help out with their International Student Orientation. I was thrilled to be surrounded by peers who also had an interest in working with international students and helping them transition to university life in Canada. My favourite event was going for dinner one night at Flapjacks for a “Canadian” dinner. It’s difficult trying to describe exactly what a cheese curd is to someone who has never had poutine. So, I encouraged everyone around me to try poutine for the first time, while I ordered my Canadian favourite: home fries. It was an excellent night had by all.

I have my own busy schedule going on this year, as I am also involved with Carleton University’s Exchange Association, a society that creates events throughout the year for international exchange students.

The thought of soon graduating from Carleton breaks my heart; I am so beyond thankful for everything that the university has offered me, both academically and socially. I am not going to wish away this last year, but instead use it to enjoy everything that I am involved with at Carleton.

Here’s to one last and final year together Carleton. I can’t wait to see what you have in store!
