Hi Meagan! I'm so glad to hear that you are excited about university!

Well, for me, ever since the beginning of high school, I've wanted to have a career in the medical/health field. So, when it came down to picking a university, I looked at what programs best fit this goal of mine. Carleton stood out to me for numerous reasons: the courses offered (I wanted to make sure the program had all the prerequisite courses I would need to get into the medical field), lab/research opportunities for undergraduate students, the professors and volunteer/community involvement opportunities.

I am so glad that I chose Carleton! I've had such an amazing four years here. I have had the opportunity to do scientific research in three different labs (animal behaviour, organic/biochemistry and neuroscience). Research experience is an important factor for getting into the medical/health field as well as pursuing graduate studies. The professors at Carleton are amazing as well! They are very approachable and friendly, and are always willing to guide you in your decisions for the future. I also love getting involved (extra-curricular activities are also important for getting into the medical/health field) and Carleton has so many things you can be a part of!

My program is the Integrated Science Program with a concentration in Life and Health Sciences. It mostly consists of students wanting to pursue any sort of career in the health/medical field (nursing, medicine, optometry, dentistry etc.), including graduate studies.

Hope that helps a bit - good luck with everything!

Hey Amisha,

Someone from your school came to visit my high school a couple of weeks ago and I'm taking a look at the viewbook now and I can't wait. I've been highlighting everything and getting information even though I have 2-3 years left in high school. I want to go into nursing, RN, doctor etc. Is Carleton University for me? Please let me know what you think. Your blog is what caught my eye out of all things! Thanks and have a good week.

Glad to hear your vacuum formed piece turned out. I always enjoyed seeing the students reactions when it worked or didn't work. For some students this project could get quite costly. I really enjoy reading your blogs. Keep up the good work!

Hi Bianca, glad to help out! I chose the Bachelor of Journalism out of a love of writing and helping the public. It was an easy decision once I focused on what I was passionate about - writing and volunteering - and I find journalism is a great combination of public service and storytelling.

Great tips! Wish I had followed these in my first year... it's definitely better to start strong than to try to catch up later.

Thank you so much for the information on this blog! It seems like you are having a lot of fun in the journalism program, and have made me a bit less worried about going to university next fall! I was just wondering, what was it that made you want to go into journalism? Thanks!

Procrastinating is one of my favorite activities, honestly. I'm quite good at it. There should be classes offered at university studying the art of procrastination—finishing last-minute assignment, writing research papers in under three hours, useful things like that!

…Okay, bad idea. But wonderful first post, Sam :)

Hi Divya!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a 'regular health and life science program', but the program I am currently in is Integrated Science with a concentration in Life and Health Sciences. This program does an excellent job preparing you for any sort of medical or health related career. If you are interested in pursuing medicine, dentistry, veterinary school, or any other professional program (e.g. physiotherapy etc.) or even graduate school in a health or science discipline, this is the right choice.

That being said, there are other programs at Carleton that do a great job preparing you for those types of careers as well. These include Biology with a concentration in Health Sciences, Neuroscience, and Neuroscience and Mental Health. So, it really depends where your interests lie.

Hope that helps a little bit! You can ask me more questions if you would like :)

Good luck!
