Hey all, It’s the end of the year again! It’s crazy to think that two years ago I had no idea what it was like to be a university student, nonetheless an Industrial Design student at Carleton University. As an Industrial Design student, you have to live, breathe, think and talk design. I just finished my second year of classes here at Carleton and it’s been a good year – a really good year! That’s... Hey all! I know it’s been forever since I last updated my blog, but spare time in second-year Industrial Design is very rare. Myself and my fellow Industrial Design classmates just returned from a once-in-a-lifetime ‘Amazing Manufacturing Race’ trip to the Toronto area. We toured a few different factories and got to see first-hand some of the concepts we are learning about in our Mass Production Technologies class. It was really cool to tour the... Read more

Hey all, I’m back! As in back in Ottawa, from a much needed and fantastic Christmas break. It didn’t start to feel like Christmas until I returned home (Sarnia, ON) after exams. My roommates and I didn’t put up any decorations at our house in Ottawa and there were no decorations on our the street. During exams I lived in my room, so there were no festivities for me. When I went home, however, the... Read more

Hey all, it’s been a while but things have been crazy around here. They say that the second year of Industrial Design is the toughest year in the program, and they may just be right. It’s been busy, but so rewarding! Projects are starting to get much more hands on and applicable to future jobs in the industry. The first year of the program was more about building up the basics. In second year we... Read more
Let’s start this off by saying…lack of sleep. Compared to first year, second year requires much more advanced multitasking skills. In first year we had one studio, and one professor who gave us assignments and projects and we could work on them one at a time, and then the next one was due. But in second year, it not only doubles, but triples because we now have three studios, three projects to work on simultaneously,... Read more

So, I realize I haven’t written any entries since the beginning of the school year and this is due to the fact that we have been superbly busy with work this semester. I am currently heading home via the good old Greyhound bus after a night with little sleep finishing off my report for my Mass Production Technologies class (more on that later). I just had two big projects due in my Form and Colour... Read more

Welcome back! I hope you had a great summer. When I was in high school I thought that the four month summer vacation that university students got was going to feel like forever but, in truth, it feels exactly as long as the two month high school summer vacation. I am now entering my second year of Industrial Design, and it’s currently the Saturday of Labour Day weekend. My parents just left this morning, and... Read more

So here we are, almost at the end of my first year of university. Classes officially ended today. We finished up with a final in-class project in studio this morning. Now I have one final assignment due, our end of year review and three exams and then it’s summer time! For our final assignment, we went to the Aviation Museum and drew airplanes for about four hours. Now we need to take those drawings, clean... Read more

To quote Bono of good old U2, ‘It’s a beautiful day, don’t let it get away’. That statement has some truth to it. The sun is shining here in Ottawa on this Sunday afternoon and it’s almost warm enough for shorts and a t-shirt (well maybe not quite yet but it’s coming). Second semester has been an amazing experience for me here at Carleton. The workload has been less stressful than first semester, so I’ve... Read more

Hey. Guess what? I just made twenty bucks for sitting around and giving my thoughts and opinions on how residence has been. It was pretty sweet. These opportunities don’t come up very often, but when they do, grab a hold of them, cause it’s pretty awesome to be making $20 an hour, even if it is only for one hour. There were about ten of us gathered in a room, and we had to rate... Read more
