Why did you choose Carleton?
Carleton University stood out to me above all of the other universities because students were able to specialize in Communication Studies in their first year. Also, Carleton offers a co-op option that allows you to spend work terms in your field of study while pursuing your university degree. But besides that, Carleton is located in the beautiful city of Ottawa, directly alongside the Rideau Canal – in the summer you can bike and walk along the Canal and in the winter you have the opportunity to skate on it and grab a Beaver Tail on route. However, above all, Carleton University just felt right. When I received my acceptance, I didn’t have to think twice about accepting my offer.
Why do you recommend Carleton to prospective students?
If you’re looking to make unforgettable friends, have the time of your life and get an education that will lead to a future full of success, then Carleton is the place for you. I have made so many wonderful friends and have made so many new and unforgettable memories. I have learned a great deal already and have experienced so much more of life then I ever thought possible. Ottawa is a friendly city and Carleton fits Ottawa like a glove. For me, one of Carleton’s greatest features is probably the underground tunnels. In a winter city like Ottawa, the tunnels are a great way to stay out of the cold! If you live in residence, you never have to go outside!
What are your post-graduate plans:
Before I pursue a career, I have plans to backpack through Europe and visit the places I learned about in my Art History classes at Carleton. After first year, I became so passionate about Art History that I couldn’t resist making it my minor. After traveling, I hope to find myself working for a public relations firm or agency.
What clubs/events/athletics/extra-curricular activities do you participate in at Carleton?
I am currently the Communications and Publicity Director for Carleton’s Sock N’ Buskin Theatre Company! Yes, Carleton does have a theatre company, so please come check us out! I am also a writer for the Charlatan (Carleton’s student independent weekly newspaper). After volunteering for the Emerging Leadership Program in my first year, this year I became an advertising team member for Carleton’s first-ever student run leadership conference (Yes, You Can) which has been an exciting experience!
Where is your favourite place to hang out on campus?
My favorite place to hang out on campus is a tough one. Carleton students are so fortunate to have so many great places to hang out, but I must say Oliver’s on a Thursday night is probably my favorite. A bunch of friends and I love de-stressing by hitting up the dance floor after essays and exams. It’s a great place to socialize and meet new people.
Where is the best place to eat on campus?
The Garden Spot! It’s vegetarian – it’s hidden, so I challenge you to find it !
What is the most interesting class you have taken at Carleton?
Besides my absolute passion for Art History, the most interesting classes I have taken include Death and the Afterlife – perspectives from various religions – and Introduction to Jazz History. Both are fantastic courses and highly recommended them if you’re looking to explore a wide range of topics!
Who is your favourite Carleton professor and why?
I don’t have a single favorite professor, because I’ve been greatly inspired by all of my Carleton professors! I highly recommend Chris Russill for Communication Studies because he really got me excited about my program in first year. Ira Wagman is also fantastic for Communication Studies – he taught me how to study by asking, ‘so what?’. My learning experience has never been the same – in a good way!
