Mature Applicants
A “Mature Applicant” is an applicant who satisfies all of the criteria listed below:
- are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
- have not attended a college or university as full-time student;
- have been away from full-time studies for at least two calendar years;
- do not meet the normal admission requirements (as published in the Undergraduate Calendar);
- have completed any required prerequisite subject(s).
Mature applicants must fulfill all necessary program prerequisites before applying. Mature applicants must have:
a) secondary school graduation in an academic program (required average will vary according to program); or b) completed as a Special Student at Carleton University, one appropriate full credit (or two half credits) with a C- or better standing in the first attempt (or in both of the first two half credit attempts); or c) other academic or work experience which, in the opinion of the admissions committee, indicates a likelihood of success at university.
Mature applicants must submit the following:
1. biographical information (approximately 500 to 1000 words outlining what you have been doing since leaving full-time studies, your goals, what you expect to gain from a university education, and why you feel you will be successful in your studies) 2. transcript of secondary studies and/or most recent studies. Mature applicants are not normally considered for admission to Public Affairs and Policy Management, Music, Journalism, Commerce or International Business. The admissions committee reviews all applications on an individual basis. Admission requirements vary by program. Check the following link:
- June 1, 2012 for Fall admission (for September 2012 entry).
- October 15, 2011for Winter admission (January 2012 entry).
- Not all degree programs are available in January.

Note: Applicants who are required to submit documents originating outside of Canada or the United States must apply before April 1. Applications may be received after these deadlines with no guarantee that they will be processed in time for the session requested.

- Base Application Fee charged by the OUAC: $130
- Admission Processing Fee charged by the OUAC on behalf of Carleton University: $59
- Additional Fees charged by the OUAC may be applicable: additional choice fee of $42 for each university/program choice beyond the initial base three university choices, mailing surcharge for address outside Canada, etc.
You are required to reveal all previous secondary and post-secondary studies (whether they were successfully completed or not) when completing the application for admission.
You will receive an acknowledgment letter confirming that we received your application within 4 – 6 weeks of submission.
Your acknowledgment letter contains your Carleton applicant number. You will need this number to access our on-line system,
Carleton Central. You can check your application(s), the status of your application(s), and make updates to your address and phone number, if required.
If you’re applying to Architectural Studies, Humanities, Industrial Design, Information Technology (Interactive Media and Design), Music or Social Work, you’ll be required to provide additional documentation to support your application. Here are the deadlines:

If your first language is not English you can prove your language proficiency in a number of ways.
- Demonstrate that you have completed three years of full-time secondary or post-secondary education in Canada or in another country where English is the primary language and the language of instruction (e.g. U.K., U.S.A, or Australia).
- Submit passing results from any one of the four following language assessment tests.

You will view your offer package in Carleton Central. Included in your package is important information about your degree program, financial assistance, residence and more.
You may apply for a space in residence by submitting an application to be included in the lottery taking place on June 11, 2012. For more information please contact the Housing Office at 613-520-5612 or visit the

If you receive an Offer of Admission and wish to accept, you need to confirm within 3 weeks of the date of the offer to reserve your space in the program.
If you applied directly through the Carleton University website:
Log in to Carleton Central and accept your offer on the Admission Offer Details page.
If you applied through the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC):
Log in to your OUAC account (www.ouac.on.ca/105) to accept your offer. You will require your OUAC reference number along with your COMPASS password/PIN.
- Select “All Other Undergraduate Applicants (OUAC 105)”
- Select “Review and Change Your Completed Application”
- Select the “Choices/Offers” link
Important: you must complete all steps when responding to an offer of admission at OUAC. A completed transaction will generate a confirmation number. You cannot accept an offer of admission from two Ontario universities. A second confirmation will automatically cancel the first.
