My university experience (so far!)…
When you’re in high school, it feels like those four years will last forever. However, trust me, there is life after high school!
University isn’t easy, not by a long shot. Papers usually trump sleep, and coffee usually trumps everything else. But you learn quickly that when you attend your classes, go to your tutorials, get help when you need it, do your readings and make an effort on assignments, it all adds up to less stress and a lot more productivity.
I feel like I’m a different person since being here at Carleton. I’m a lot more open to conversation and debate in and out of class. I have found that there really isn’t the pressure to conform into a single group or a single opinion. Differences are acknowledged and celebrated by the students and professors I know. I am still meeting people everyday who are ridiculously passionate about the same things I am. And for me, that was extremely difficult to find in high school.
When I came to Carleton, I really had no idea what to expect. My first year was tough, but I quickly found what I really loved to do and what I loved to learn about. I certainly didn’t know that by my second year of university I would have changed majors and moved into my own apartment. You really never know what can happen within those eight months.
I’m a lot more content with who I am and where I am in my life compared to my high school experience. Do the constant essays and papers stress me out? For sure. But am I happier now than I ever was? Yes!
The transition from high school to university may be difficult, but it is definitely a step worth taking. You begin to really figure out what you want out of life and out of your education – two extremely important things to consider. As long as you’re happy and doing what you love, that’s all that really matters!
