As the fall term comes to and end…

Hi everyone!

I am so sorry for my lack of posts in these past couple of weeks. This school year has just been so unbelievably busy – just one thing after another!

I promised myself I was going to exercise everyday after my midterms were finished (which was about 2 weeks ago). I was good at generating excuses for not exercising during my first two years of university, but I am now finally realizing the importance of exercise. University life can be stressful and exercise is important not only for a healthy body, but also for your mind. It took me a while to realize this but, nonetheless, I am exercising regularly now. Carleton students don’t even have the excuse of not being able to afford it, as access to the athletic facilities, including the gym and pool, is included in your tuition!

My classes are going extremely well! I’m finding third year significantly easier than 1st and 2nd year. As you move on through your university years, the class sizes become smaller, and the topics seem to get more interesting.

The fall term is beginning to wrap up – I have a lot of assignments and projects due in the next couple of weeks, as well as a lab exam to write. Final exams are also just around the corner, which is definitely a scary thought for many of us students. I am pretty much convinced that time flies when you’re in university – time didn’t seem to go this fast in high school!

My Peer Helper position at the Student Experience Office has also been going very well – I am so glad I got involved. I get to work with great people and get to plan so many fun and exciting events. We successfully ran the CU Amazing Race event a couple of weeks ago. I had so much fun helping to organize and execute the event. Everyone had a great time and some great prizes were won!

A great thing about Carleton is the university’s Co-Cirricular Record (CCR) program. it is basically an official University document that states everything you’ve done outside of academics at Carleton University. You can add certain clubs or societies you are part of, as well as any volunteering you do (like the Peer Helper program).

A great service at Carleton (that I unfortunately only started using this year) is the Career Centre. Many of us coming into university, as well as after graduating, still don’t know what we would like to do in terms of a career. The Career Centre at Carleton is just the right place to find a little direction! They have so many neat and interesting resources. You can also meet with career counselors who will assist you with a wide range of things, from looking over your resume, to conducting a mock job interview.

Being in an honours science degree, I have to complete an honours thesis in my 4th year. Many of my peers and I are currently in the midst of finding a supervisor for our respective honours thesis. It’s not such an easy job, so I’m glad I’m starting early! At the moment, I’ve contacted some professors whose research seems of interest to me. I will be meeting with these professors to discuss their research as well as some ideas that I have.

Anyhow, I should get back to the ample amount of work piled up on my desk. Talk soon!

Keep smiling,

Amisha
